US Envoy to Greenland Emphasizes Dialogue, Not Conquest
During an interview with a news agency on Tuesday, Jeff Landry stressed that conversations with Greenlanders are essential to grasp their aspirations for the future.
He posed the questions: “What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven't they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?”
Surveys have consistently shown that Greenlanders oppose any attempt by Washington to annex their territory.
On Sunday, Trump announced that Landry, who also serves as Louisiana’s governor but has no prior diplomatic background, would act as the US special envoy to Greenland.
In reaction, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint declaration affirming that Greenland belongs to its own people.
Greenland, which functions as a self-governing territory under Denmark, has drawn American interest due to its strategic position and abundant natural resources.
Trump has previously stated that the US requires Greenland for “national security reasons, not for minerals.”
Following Landry’s appointment, the European Union expressed its support for both Denmark and Greenland on Monday.
